On Mount Corcovado above Rio de Janeiro, Christ the Redeemer Statue is a work of our time. Rio is a modern city of pleasure and poverty. Cariocas, as the native people are called, love their beaches and Carnivale, their pre-Lenten celebration, similar to New Orleans's Mardi Gras. The great statue, with outstretched arms, stands atop one of Rio's several peaks, in contrast to the activities below. Begun in 1927, inaugurated in 1931, the 100th anniversary of Brazil's independence from it European colonizer, Portugal, the statue has both political and religious significance. Aligns with McDougal Littell's World History: Struggles for Democracy.
