The largest Classical marble temple was at Ephesus in Asia Minor. It was dedicated to the Greek goddess Artemis (Roman Diana); in this case in her role as a fertility icon. The Greek builders were inspired by monumental Egyptian architecture, and even adapted and improved some of their technologies. The result was a beautifully proportioned, yet huge, center of worship for the pagan people of its time. Aligns with McDougal Littell's World History: Classical Greece.
